Wenger backs Wilshere comments

Arsene Wenger has backed Jack Wilshere, after the midfielder made the headlines following comments he made regarding only English players representing England, the Express understands.

Wilshere’s views came in the light of Belgian midfielder Adnan Januzaj’s eye-catching performance for Manchester United at the weekend, which led to talk of him being able to represent England in the future due residency rules.

The 21 year old then took to Twitter to clarify that his comments were not a personal swipe at Januzaj, just his opinion in general, though he faced a backlash from cricketer Kevin Pieterson who pointed out a list of great British sportsmen who were born abroad.

However, Wenger has taken the side of his player, saying that he also believes that only an Englishman should manage the England team.

Meanwhile, the Gunners are reportedly considering a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan, according to the Mirror.

The USA international has impressed so far this season, including a stand-out performance which helped his side beat Arsenal on the opening day of the campaign.

The North London club were constantly linked with moves for a new goalkeeper during the summer, and despite bringing in Emiliano Viviano on loan, are set to start their search again when the transfer window reopens in January.
