Following Arsenal’s disappointing draw with Sunderland at the weekend, most fans have been hopeful of Arsene Wenger bolstering his squad ahead of the close of the transfer window. Fortunately, it looks as though supporters won’t have to wait too long, with several sources claiming that Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin is going to join the club on a season-long loan in the next few days.
There has been intense speculation linking Wenger with a move for Sahin, although there have been doubts over a move materializing with Liverpool also supposedly in the running for the 23-year-old. It was thought that Brendan Rodgers’ friendship with Madrid manager Jose Mourinho would play a huge part in the deal, yet various respected media outlets are now reported that a deal with Arsenal is all but finalised.
It is understood that the Gunners have pushed through the move following Alex Song’s £15m move to Barcelona. Moreover, with Arsenal netting a hefty transfer fee for the sale of Song, sources have suggested that Wenger has signed Sahin on loan with a view to the transfer becoming permanent next term.
Such an acquisition will be welcomed with open arms by Gunners supporters, with Sahin regarded as a hugely talented prospect. Even though his short career at Madrid has hardly been a success, he was regarded as one of the best players in Germany as recently as two years ago. In fact, one German magazine named the player as the best in the Bundesliga for the 2010/11 campaign, which shows exactly how high his reputation is through Europe.
Of course, even though Gunners fans will be delighted with such a signing, many will be hoping that Wenger dips into the market for another attacking player. It was obvious during the goalless draw at the weekend that Arsenal are missing that vital firepower, even though new signings Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski both featured.
