Gunners claim top spot

Arsenal moved to top spot in the Premier League following their 3-1 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday afternoon.

New signing Mesut Ozil was handed his debut, and it was he who assisted Olivier Giroud’s eleventh minute opener.

The France international has scored in all four of the Gunners league games so far this season, though it was the performance of midfielder Aaron Ramsey that stole the headlines.

Following Craig Gardner’s penalty equaliser, the Wales international scored two goals to wrap up victory for Arsene Wenger’s men, and send them to the top of the table.

The club will now turn their attention to Wednesday evening’s Champions League group opener against Marsielle.

Their plans have already been disrupted, after Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud joined an already lengthy injury list, though the latter took to Twitter too quash fears of any serious damage.

Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Samuel Eto’o has admitted that he was close to securing a move to Arsenal at the beginning of the century, the Daily Star understands.

At the time, the Cameroonian was struggling to hold down a place at Real Madrid, but it was fellow La Liga side Mallorca who swept in to secure his services.
