City beat Gunners to close gap at the top

Arsenal have seen their lead at the top of the Premier League cut to just two points after losing 6-3 to title favourites Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Sergio Aguero put the hosts in front on sixteen minutes, only for Theo Walcott to equalise with his first league goal of the season a quarter of an hour later.

Alvaro Negredo restored City’s lead six minutes before the break before Fernandinho added a third five minutes after the restart.

Theo Walcott grabbed his second of the game just past the hour mark before David Silva restored the hosts two goal advantage on sixty-six minutes.

Fernandinho put Manuel Pellegrini’s men out of reach with two minutes of the ninety to play, though there was still time for a goal for either side, first from Per Mertesacker and then Yaya Toure from the spot.

The Gunners will now turn their attention to Monday evening’s visit of Chelsea, when the Blues could leapfrog them with three points, while Liverpool will be top on Christmas Day if they beat Cardiff City, and Arsene Wenger’s men fail to win.

Meanwhile, the club will face holders Bayern Munich in the last sixteen of the Champions League, with the first leg set to be played at the Emirates on February 19th.
