Following intense speculation over the past week, it appears as though Arsenal are extremely close to confirming the signing of Santi Cazorla. The news comes following comments from a couple of the player’s teammates, with Malaga midfielder Enzo Maresca and striker Julio Baptista indicating that the midfielder has already been sold.

It came to light last week that Cazorla was one of two players that were set to sign for the Gunners, with the other being Nuri Sahin. However, despite all of the reports linking the duo to the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal chiefs have remained quiet which have caused several supporters to worry.

The comments from a couple of Malaga’s teammates should certainly settle a few nerves though, with two players practically confirming the news that Arsenal fans have been awaiting. Firstly, Maresca told the press, “He (Pellegrini) is fundamental for us, just as Cazorla and Rondon were fundamental and who have had to be sold”. This was then followed by comments by Julio Baptista on Twitter, with the former Arsenal striker writing, “I would like to wave a goodbye wave to my good friends who are leaving, Rondon and Cazorla. Big hugs all round, we will miss you.”

Of course, it is never wise to raise expectations prior to official announcements. However, the fact that two players from Malaga have made such comments is certainly encouraging and will provide Arsenal fans with plenty of optimism with just two weeks remaining until the new campaign. Ever since the speculation began, there have been huge amounts of anticipation about the signing of Cazorla considering his massive reputation in Spain. The 27-year-old is regarded as one of the best midfielders in his home country and his signature would be a major coup for Arsene Wenger, especially given all the turmoil at the Emirates Stadium this summer.
