Bendtner set for Arsenal recall

Nicklas Bendtner is set to make his first appearance for Arsenal in over two years as the Gunners travel to West Bromwich Albion in the third round of the Capital One Cup this evening.

Theo Walcott has joined the long list of Arsenal absentees with an abdominal problem that will require surgery, and that is likely to see him miss England’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Poland next month.

Arsene Wenger’s men are looking for an eighth straight victory, but the starting XI for tonight is likely to be much changed, as is the custom for this competition, certainly regarding the North London club over the past few years.

They have lost just one of the last eleven meetings with the Baggies, a run which includes wins in the four matches.

Goals from Sanchez Watt and Carlos Vela secured the win when the sides last met in this competition, in the third round of the 2009/10 campaign.

Elsewhere, Arsenal have been linked with a move for Italy international Andrea Pirlo, the Express understands.

The veteran midfielder is unlikely to be offered a new contract with by Juventus if reports are to be believed; news that has alerted the Gunners and a number of their Premier League rivals.
