Arshavin completes Zenit return

Andrey Arshavin has completed his return to Zenit St. Petersburg following the expiration on his contract with Arsenal.

The 32 year old became Arsenal’s record signing when he signed from Zenit in 2009, scoring six goals in the final three months of the 2008/09 Premier League campaign, including all four in a memorable draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

Sixty-seven league appearances over the next two seasons followed, though a dip in form two seasons ago saw him loaned to Zenit for three months in 2012.

His made only two starts for the Gunners last season, both of which coming in the League Cup.

Meanwhile, Hannover 96 are confident of agreeing a permanent deal for Gunners defender Johan Djourou, according to Sky Sports.

The 26 year old spent the second half of last season with the Bundesliga club, making fourteen appearances at the heart of the defence.

Djourou, who has two years remaining on his contract at Arsenal, is also said to be a target for Hamburg.

Elsewhere, the Express understand that Sunderland are leading in the race to sign Le Harve defender Benjamin Mendy.

The Gunners were linked with a move for the 18 year old left-back, though they look set to withdraw their interest.
