Arsenal win to clinch fourth spot

Arsenal secured qualification to the Champions League for a sixteenth season in a row with a narrow victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park yesterday.

Just as last season, Lauent Koscielny struck the vital winner on the final day to help Arsenal finish a point above local rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who must once again settle for a place in the Europa League.

The result completed a remarkable turnaround for the Gunners, who trailed Spurs by seven points following defeat at White Hart Lane on March 3rd.

However, that result proved to be their only defeat in their last sixteen games, as they went on to amass 73 points, their best return in three seasons.

The club have already announced that they are set to spend big in the summer, and their ability to offer Champions League football will do no harm as they hope to attract a number of key players.

Montenegrin striker Stevan Jovetic has been long linked with a move to the Emirates, and a dramatic end to the Serie A season could further persuade him to leave Fiorentina.

Vincenzo Montella’s side narrowly missed out on qualification for the Champions League against the odds after AC Milan came from behind late on to beat Siena and take third place.
