Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over in form Newcastle United at St. James’ Park yesterday afternoon.
Olivier Giroud’s 65th minute header was enough to secure all three points for Arsene Wenger’s men, and move them back above Manchester City, who briefly overtook them after beating Crystal Palace 1-0 at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
Chelsea remain third after beating a Liverpool side who have slipped to fifth place despite being top just four days ago 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, while Everton have moved into the top four after beating Southampton 2-1 at Goodison Park.
Newcastle have slipped to eight place after losing for only the second time in ten games, while wins for champions Manchester United and North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur have seen them rise to sixth and seventh place respectively.
Arsene Wenger’s men will now turn their attention to the New Year’s Day visit of Cardiff City, before they face Spurs in the third round of the FA Cup at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.
They then return to Premier League action with a trip to Aston Villa eight days later before ending the month with a home game against Fulham and an away fixture at Southampton.
