Arsenal set to lose defenders?

Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen is reportedly a target for Spanish giants Barcelona.

The Sun claim that the Belgian, and Daniel Agger of Liverpool, are being lined up as replacements for Eric Abidal and Carlos Puyol, who at 33 and 34 respectively are coming to the end of their careers.

A figure of £15 million has been mentioned regarding the Gunners skipper, who moved to the Emirates from Ajax in 2009.

Elsewhere, right back Carl Jenkinson has been linked with a move to Manchester City.

The Premier League champions have already taken a number of players from Arsenal in recent years, with Samir Nasri, Kolo Toure and Gael Clichy currently at Eastlands, while Emmanuel Adebayor has gone on to sign for Tottenham Hotspur.

Jenkinson, who won his first international cap last November, was reportedly a target for City whilst at Charlton Athletic, and the Mirror claim that they are considering renewing their interest as they continue their commitment to signing young English talent.

The 21 year old signed a new contract with Gunners in November, with the club rebuffing a number of approaches for clubs wishing to take him on loan in January.

Meanwhile, Arsenal target Adil Rami has suggested to French television station Canal+ that he will remain at Valencia.

The defender has been on Aresnal’s radar, as well as being linked with Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.
