Arsenal crash to opening day defeat

Arsenal endured a miserable start to their Premier League campaign after falling to a 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts took an early lead through Olivier Giroud, but a Christian Benteke double and a third from debutant Antonio Luna wrapped up victory for the visitors.

To make matters worse for the Gunners, they saw defender Laurent Koscielny dismissed in the 67th minute after a foul on Andreas Weimann and in Bacaray Sagna, Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, lost three players to injury.

The result was Arsenal’s first opening day defeat in twenty years, and arguably reiterates their need to dip into the transfer market.

The club have been linked with a whole host of big names this summer but have so far only managed to bring in France under 20 striker Yaya Sanogo, who was an unused substitute at the weekend.

The Mirror have reported that Arsene Wenger will revive his interest for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, after previous top target Luis Suarez has appeared to patch up his differences with Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

Rooney was a second half substitute in United’s 4-1 win at Swansea City, but cut a lonely figure as his teammates celebrated both goals that he assisted.
