Alisher Usmanov backs retaining Arsene Wenger

One of Arsenal’s largest shareholders, Alisher Usmanov, says that Arsenal should consider retaining Arsene Wenger at all costs.

Recent discontent amongst fans has seen a campaign against the Frenchman calling for him to leave the club at the end of the campaign. This is after yet another faltering league title challenge. The club has been looking like being capable of winning league titles only to falter massively at some stage in the season. Often, the club leave themselves with a huge distance due to poor early-season form or end up throwing away the title at the business end of the campaign.

The 2015-16 campaign is reflecting the latter since Arsenal were leading the table towards Christmas. They have since fallen way behind and are 11 points behind table leaders Leicester City. After being knocked out of the FA Cup and the Champions League, the club are set to finish trophy less once again. Arsenal fans have seen their club win a major honour only twice in the last decade. Those two successes came in the FA Cup with many blaming Wenger as the reason for failing to mount a title challenge.Usmanov, who is still hoping to become the sole owner of Arsenal, gave his views about retaining Wenger.

“Arsenal’s results are stable. They are always among the leaders of the English Premier League. This is a good and large sports business project, and I am pleased with it. The only thing is that today such situation occurred, like in any sport, there are ups and downs. The club must retain its major symbol and main asset – manager Arsene Wenger.Failures have been haunting Arsenal for many years now, they cannot become the EPL champions. This has led to some discontent with Wenger’s position as a manager,” said the Russian.
